The question of freedom of will is of great importance to Epicurus. Freedom of the will as an indeterminism first appeared in Greek philosophy with full clarity in Epicurus.

It is natural that the teaching of Epicurus, which finds the sole purpose of philosophy to bring happiness to man, will attempt to prove that man is not a toy in the hands of blind necessity, and that he can determine his own destiny. For this reason, Epicurus states that although it is true that the act of will of man depends on many internal and external conditions, man is not absolutely dependent on these influences, he can even decide against them or choose without reason.
