Epicurus (Epicure, Epicurus) Understanding of PsychologyJune 26, 2021
Like his physic, Epicurus’ psychology is also materialistic.
The task of psychology is to free man from the fear of death. Spirit is also material, corporeal, because only material being can be active and passive. The soul is composed of four elements: a body such as fire, breath, and air, and a body that cannot be definitively named. The first three elements form the part of the soul that is spread throughout the body and in which there is no mind (alogon).
This part is not very psychic, its physiological aspect corresponds to the soul. The fourth element of the soul (logikon) is located in our chest, where we feel fear and joy, it is located here; This is the main carrier of spiritual and spiritual life. After death, these four elements that make up the soul are separated from each other, that is, the soul dissolves and disperses. Therefore there can be no word of either immortality or transmigration; Thus, all our fears and frights, which are connected to these two thoughts, disappear. Death cannot frighten us, because as long as we live there is no death, and when death comes, we are no more.
