Ibn Rushd was born in Cordoba in 1126. His real name is Muhammed, his father’s name is Ahmed.

He was known as Ibn Rushd (son of Rusd) because of the name of Rushd, who was his grandfather’s grandfather. He is the son of a family of scholars. Ebü’l-Valid Muhammed, who was the judge of Cordoba like himself and gave his name to him, was one of the leading scholars of the Maliki sect.

After his primary education, Ibn Rushd took courses in the fields of fiqh, kalam and Arabic literature from well-known teachers in accordance with the intellectual model of his time; He then studied medicine and philosophy. It was presented by the well-known philosopher of the period, Ibn Tufayl, to the Caliph Abu Yakup Yusuf, an enlightened statesman (1160). In the same year, he completed the famous medical encyclopedia al-Külliyât. The caliph, who was interested in philosophy, commissioned him to comment on the works of Aristotle. Ibn Rushd was first appointed as the judge of Isbiliye (Seville) and then as the head of Cordoba. Ten years later, the philosopher, who became a palace physician in Marrakech, continued his teaching work in the meantime. The position of Ibn Rushd did not change for a long time during the reign of Abu Yusuf Mansur, who succeeded him after Abu Yakup’s death in 1184. For some unknown reason, the caliph’s attitude reversed and he drove the philosopher with his disciples to the town of Eliana (Lucena); but soon they got better again. However, the philosopher soon died in Marrakech in 1198.

philosophy

Ibn Rusht tried to fuse Aristotle’s thought system with Islam. According to him, there is no conflict between Islam and philosophy. He thought that one could reach the truth through both philosophy and religion. He believed in the eternity of the universe and the pre-extant of forms.

Arguing that the basic subject of philosophy is existence, and that philosophy tries to examine and explain what exists and what is given to man in a general integrity, Averroes referred to God as a supreme being at the top of all kinds of existence, from the beings that only exist, that are perceived with the five senses and explained with the principles of reason. He said we could go out. He stated that philosophy is the discipline that deals with all the objects gathered under the concept of being. For this reason, philosophy comes before theology in the system of thought. However, he said that each of philosophy and theology has its own specific function.
