Gottlob Frege’s Contributions to the Philosophy of LanguageJune 27, 2021
Frege’s aim is not to develop a comprehensive theory of meaning. He entered the subjects related to the philosophy of language to the extent that his main project was concerned, but his studies in these fields were extremely important in terms of the development of the philosophy of language.
We have already mentioned Frege’s treatment of concepts as functions. The distinction made by Frege between the object and the concept was essential in the establishment of the logic of quantification. However, perhaps Frege’s most important impact on the development of philosophy of language has been the distinction he made between Sinn (“meaning”) and Bedeutung (“reference”, also translated as “reference” or “direction”).
