The Art of Military Service (Dell’arte della guerra) is Niccolo Machiavelli’s first and only political book published during his lifetime. The book includes a speech by Machiavelli and some of his friends at the Rucellai Palace.

Although the speech took place in 1517, he began writing in 1519. The reason for writing the book is that his friend Cosimo Rucellai, the owner of the palace, died at an early age in 1519. It was written on Cosimo’s regret that he could not leave a work that will keep his name alive in his last days. However, the book is more than a debt of loyalty, it is a book about the army systems and disadvantages of the Italian city-states of the period, what to do, and Machiavelli explains the importance and benefits of militias rather than mercenary forces.
