What Is Crude Evolutionism, What Does It Mean?July 2, 2021
Spencer’s conception of evolution. The evolutionist doctrine of the English philosopher Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) is known as vulgar evolutionism. According to Spencer, evolution takes place in continuous and quantitative increments, there is no qualitative change or leap. The metaphysical understanding, which previously completely denied evolution, later turned to Spencer’s understanding in the face of advancing scientific achievements, and tried to limit it to only quantitative accumulations by giving up denying evolution altogether. Dialectical materialism has proven the falsity of vulgar evolutionism and showed that evolution takes place by leaping from quantity to quality. Vulger evolutionism gave birth to reformism. As a matter of fact, curativeism, in line with vulgar evolutionism, argues that society is slowly and spontaneously changing with quantitative accumulations.
Metaphysical thought increasingly turned to Bergson’s creative evolution, seeing that Spencer’s understanding was incompatible with scientific data. A famous dialectician says: “Dialectual materialism was founded against the metaphysical understanding of nature, which denies development and evolution. However, the situation has changed since then. Especially after Darwin’s theory, metaphysics gave up denying development and evolution, and tried to divert development and evolution from scientific understanding by changing tactics. This diversion is attempted to be realized by the vulgar evolutionism of Spencer and the creative evolutionism of Bergson.
