What Is Gassendism, What Does It Mean?July 1, 2021
Gassendiism is the name given to the philosophy of Gassendi, the great thinker of the 17th century, who was a follower of Epicurus. Gassendi is the most mature materialist of the Ancient Age. According to the understanding of Gassendi, the basis and substance of every being is matter, and this matter is the atom. In the 17th century, the students of the University of Paris were divided into two parts. While some of them became representatives of the Gassendian movement, the other part followed the Cartesian movement. Cartesians defended rationalism (See: What is Rationalism?), Gassendists defended empiricism (See: What is Empiricism?).
