What is Inference, What Does It Mean?July 1, 2021
To derive a new proposition from a known truth.
It is not synonymous with reasoning, it covers inferences by means of reasoning. For example, from the proposition “stone is not human”, we deduce “man is not a stone” without any means. However, we cannot conclude that “bread is nutritious” from the proposition “starch is nutritious” without knowing the proposition “bread is starch”. Reasoning, deduction, and induction are special forms of inference.
In summary, it is called inference to extract new knowledge from a certain knowledge, whether by reasoning, deduction or induction.
