A general tendency to take every thought and action on the good side. Ancient stoicism gave rise to optimism by asserting that everything in nature is good and perfect, and that evil is an unreal appearance. But this understanding of stoicism is basically based on Plato’s thought that the world is the product of the idea of the good. According to Plato, the organizing god demiourgos organized the world in the best and most perfect way; because the work of a good person is also good. This idea was elaborated centuries later by Spinoza, a naturalist like the Stoics, and systematized by the German philosopher Leibniz, whose philosophy owes much to Spinoza. According to Leibniz, “everything is the best of all possible in our world, where there is the best of all possible worlds.”
