Selfishness is the desire of man to adapt his whole environment for his own benefit. Selfishness is not the feeling of rejoicing at the harm of others, nor is it the sense of enlarging one’s own self (egoism). According to psychology, selfishness arises from the instinct of protection. The basis of social tendency is selfish requirements such as solidarity, partnership and cooperation. Altruism appears only at the end of the development of the social instinct. Selfishness is the product of the individual, altruism is the product of society. However, the development of altruism depends on social conditions.
