What is the Use of Philosophy?

What is the Use of Philosophy?

It is necessary to say a few words about the usefulness or necessity of philosophy, its socio-cultural function and the historical development of philosophy (See: What are the Benefits of Philosophy to Humans? What Does Philosophy Do?).

While the Mongolfier brothers wanted to make their first flight with the balloon they had invented, one of the spectators gathered in the square to watch the show, turning to an old, respectable lady with a friendly attitude, asked the following question with a somewhat naive attitude: “Well, what does this do, sir?” The old gentleman in question – Benjamin Franklin, the famous American scholar and politician who was visiting France at the time – replied with an equally indulgent smile: “What good is a newborn baby, sir?”

In our opinion, this answer is the best and most meaningful answer that can be given to the question of what philosophy and, in fact, other basic cultural activities in general, do in the final analysis. When we look at the subject in terms of being useful, we can also see that some of our activities that are thought to work the most do not work. For example, even science is often useless.

Philosophy; It is the truest expression of the spirit of research that makes people human and saves them from being nothing, the activity of making sense, interpretation and evaluation, the ability to ask important questions and seek answers to them seriously, the demand to be virtuous and happy, in short, the longing to reach wisdom.
