Born in the Saratov region of Russia, Spirkin graduated from Moscow University. He completed his doctorate on philosophy in 1959.
Spirkin, who became a professor in 1970, was appointed as vice president of the USSR Philosophical Society. He has come to the fore with his studies on consciousness, self-consciousness, worldview and the subjects, structure and functions of philosophy.
