Who is Bob Altemeyer?December 14, 2020
He is a professor of psychology.
Bob Altemeyer conducted research on authoritarianism. He studied the psychological conditions of authoritarian leaders and their followers. His work focused on the way followers thought and why they were so obedient and aggressive. He collected data on authoritarianism among North American politicians. Focusing on the work of Theodor Adorno and other scientists who studied authoritarian movements in the 20th century, Altemeyer published his long-term work, which he called “right-wing authoritarianism” (RWA). In this work he argued that there was a certain set of psychological traits shared by right-wing authorities. The book has been updated twice since its publication.
Altemeyer added chapters on the 2008 US presidential election and the Tea Party movement. Although Altemeyer draws most of his examples from US right-wing politics, authoritarianism is not right-wing in nature (for example, Stalin’s supporters are de facto left-wing collectivists.) The term “right wing” basically describes the stratification between leaders and followers and a kind of hyperpaternalist worldview. . Altemeyer, although the term “rightist” is used in academic terms, has become a target by right-wing intellectuals. Bob Altemeyer was awarded the Science Award for Behavioral Science Research in 1986.
