Who is Carlo Alfonso Nallino?

Carlo Alfonso The Italian orientalist Carlo Alfonso Nallino was born in Turin and studied literature at the University of Turin.

At the age of 21 he published a thesis on the Arab world and astronomy. This was followed by a work on Al-Battani and he became known for this work. From 1896 he taught at the Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples and then at the University of Palermo (1902-1913). In 1900 he published a book on the Egyptian Arabic dialect and obtained a study permit at Khedive University. Among his students was Taha Husayn, who later became Minister of the Interior.

He was elected a member of the Royal Arab Academy in Cairo in 1933 and was a member of the Royal Academy of Italy. In 1938 he traveled for two months in the Arabian Peninsula. He was able to publish only the first volumes of his work on his journey and died of a heart attack.

Nallino has left behind many books, articles and encyclopedia articles with his studies focusing on Arabistics and Islamology. All of his work has been published in six volumes by the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Rome.
