Charles Robert (February 12, 1809 – April 19, 1882) was an English naturalist.

He suggested that all living species, including humans, evolved from one or more common ancestors through natural selection, and presented a lot of evidence to support this theory. The modern theory of evolution, built on Darwin’s ideas, is the foundation and unifying element of biological science today.

Darwin’s interest in natural history developed while he was studying medicine at Edinburgh University and then theology at Cambridge University. During his five-year voyage on the Beagle, he made many observations to support the theory put forward by Charles Lyell, the famous geologist of the time, that the geological processes in the past were the same as those of the present, and he became famous as a good geologist. In the same voyage, as a result of his careful observations of the geographical distribution of living things and fossils, he became interested in the interconversion of species and developed the idea of natural selection in 1838. For a long time he did not reveal his ideas to anyone but his closest friends, having seen similar ideas described as “heresy” and suppressed. He began researching and collecting evidence to best respond to possible objections. Reading a letter from Alfred Russell Wallace in 1858, he realized that Wallace had developed a theory similar to his own, and finally decided to publish his theory.

His book On the Origin of Species, published in 1859, brought widespread acceptance to the idea that living things diversified by evolving from a common ancestor. He later examined human evolution and the idea of sexual selection in his book The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. In his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, he revealed the similarities between the ways humans and animals express their emotions.

Darwin is buried today in Westminster Abbey along with many important figures in British history.
