Who is Diotima of Mantinea?June 26, 2021
It is assumed that Diotima of Mantinea was a priestess in Arcadia. It is mentioned in Plato’s dialogue called Feast and it is reported that he was the teacher of Socrates.
Whether such a person exists seems to be a puzzle. However, it can be said that the ancient writers did not doubt its existence. Diotima appears as a person who lived and made himself accepted in a period when philosophy was considered a man’s work, love between men was valid and philosophy was forbidden to women. Plato, from the mouth of Diotima, describes Eros and glorifies love between men by defining it as “love of beauty”.
