Dirk VerhofstadtDirk Verhofstadt (born in Dendermonde, 1955) is a Belgian social liberal (Rawlsian) theorist and brother of former Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt. Karl Popper, John Stuart Mill, Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum have a great interest in political philosophy and influence in her philosophical views. He is a graduate of Ghent University Law and Press and Communications.
With his book Het menselijk liberalisme (Human Liberalism), he influences the parties of not only Belgian but also Dutch politicians such as Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie and Democraten 66. He defends liberalism against the attacks of the opponents of globalization, saying that liberalism includes/should include solidarity and that liberalism does not contradict greenist policies. She has written the books Pleidooi voor het individualisme (Demand for Individualism) and De derde feministische golf (Third Feminist Wave), mostly focusing on Islamic feminism and its implications in Europe. Feminische golf in trouble includes exclusive interviews with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Irshad Manji, Naima El Bezaz, Nahed Selim, Naema Tahir and Yasmine Allas.
He is a member of Liberales, an independent think tank involved in the liberal movement. Members of Liberales view liberalism as a progressive movement that promotes individual freedom, law and human rights. Liberales opposes narrow-minded conservatism regarding social economy, environmental and moral issues, supported by various parties and bodies.
His views are believed to have been instrumental in shifting the VLD’s line from center-right to center-left in the 1990s and early 2000s (especially when his brother Guy was leader).
