Gerald Allan “Jerry” Cohen, (b. 1941) Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory, All Souls College, Oxford.

Born to a Jewish family in Montreal, Cohen was educated at McGill University, Canada (BA, philosophy and political science) and The University of Oxford (philosophy) under Isaiah Berlin and Gilbert Ryle. Cohen held several positions in the Philosophy Department at University College London from 1963 to 1984, before being appointed Chichele Professor at Oxford in 1985. Many of his former students, such as Jonathan Wolff, Michael Otsuka, Will Kymlicka, and Seana Shiffrin, became important political thinkers in their fields.

Known as a proponent of Analytic Marxism and a member of the September Group, Cohen’s 1978 work, Karl Marx’s Theory of History: A Defense, has been criticized by critics as ‘economic determinism’ or ‘technological determinism’. advocates an interpretation of fashion.
