Hans Kelsen (October 11, 1881 – April 19, 1973) was an Austro-US citizen jurist of Jewish descent. He is famous for his Pure Law Theory.
Born in Prague, Kelsen moved to Vienna with his family when he was just two years old. He studied law at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1906. He married Marfarete Bondi in 1912. In 1919 he became a professor of public and administrative law at the University of Vienna. He also worked on the drafting of the new Austrian Constitution in 1920. His famous work, Salt Law Theory, was published for the first time in 1934. Due to the rise of the Nazis in Europe, he first went to Geneva and then to the United States in 1940.
