The French philosopher has retired from the Philosophy Professorship at the University of Paris-VIII (St. Denis). He became famous for Reading Capital, which he co-wrote with the Marxist thinker Louis Althusser in the 1960s.

In 2006 it was stated that Rancière’s aesthetic theory has become a reference point in the visual arts. Rancière has lectured at art world events such as the Freize Art Fair. Former French presidential candidate Ségolène Royal has said that Rancière was his favorite philosopher.

In 2003, Rancière sent a letter to Putin, which he signed with several other French intellectuals, protesting the illegitimacy of the 2003 Chechen referendum.
