John Ellis McTaggart (b. 1866 – d. 1925), English idealist thinker who was influenced by Hegel.

According to Mc Taggart, who argues that we have to find sound and valid reasons for what we believe instinctively, and that we have to support beliefs with metaphysical reasoning, traditional theology cannot be based on philosophical criticism; man cannot be justified in his religious attitude. Therefore, according to Mc Taggart, whose religious attitude sought to develop a metaphysics that would justify his belief that there is harmony between us and the universe, the universe must consist of spirit; Secondly, it must include love. And finally, the universe as a whole must be good, or evolve into a perfect state of well-being.
