Who is John Rawls?June 25, 2021
American moral and political philosopher.
Rawls, who studied at Princeton University, joined the army after graduating from school. He was on active military duty in the Pacific during the Second World War. Seeing the ruins of the city after the bombing of Hiroshima, Rawls resigned from the military and decided to continue his philosophy studies and completed his master’s and doctorate at Princeton University.
Rawls expanded his philosophy studies at Oxford University and met philosopher Isaiah Berlin there. He then returned to the United States to continue his studies and lectured at Cornell and MIT. He went to Harvard and wrote his book “A Theory of Justice” there. While working at Harvard, he also tutored Thomas Nagel.
Rawls, who suffered multiple strokes throughout his life, was born on February 21, 1921, continued to think and write until the end of his life, and died on October 24, 2002.
