(born November 25, 1814 – d. March 20, 1878) was a German physician and physicist who is considered one of the founders of thermodynamics.

Mayer is known for his law of conservation of energy, which he expressed in 1841, which is now known as the first law of thermodynamics. This statement is one of the first statements of the law of conservation of energy and can be summarized as follows:

“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed.”

In 1842, Mayer explained the chemical reaction known today as oxidation, which is vital as a primary source of energy for all living things. Mayer’s achievements during his lifetime were ignored, and the discovery of the mechanical equivalent of heat was given priority to James Joule. Mayer also suggested that plants convert light energy into chemical energy.
