Who is Macit Gökberk?June 26, 2021
Macit Gökberk was born in Thessaloniki.
After graduating from Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy, he completed his doctorate at the University of Berlin in Germany. When he returned to Turkey, he taught philosophy at Istanbul University, from which he graduated. Macit Gökberk, who stands out with his studies in the history of philosophy, also worked on language and thought. He made an effort to make philosophy understandable in plain Turkish. He was also the president of the Turkish Language Association for many years.
One of the functions of philosophy is that it is necessary to make people aware of the consciousness of the age in order to strengthen the culture. He states that philosophy has a duty to enlighten people when society is in a deadlock. Because, according to him, philosophy is in life and enables the whole of the truth to be understood. He states that the philosophy made in Turkey led the country to enlightenment and that Turkey had to go through some social phases like the West.
Awards are given by the Philosophy Society of Turkey on behalf of Macit Gökberk, and the institution presents the Philosophy Award to his family every year in memory of Macit Gökberk.
His work, which constitutes a source in terms of philosophy, is “History of Philosophy”. The highlights of his other works are “Changing World, Changing Language”, “Ancient Philosophers Raised by Western Anatolia”, “Philosophy of Enlightenment, Revolutions and Atatürk”, “Kant and Herder’s Understanding of History”.
