Who is Nancy Hartsock?June 26, 2021
Nancy Hartsock (born 1943) is a feminist philosopher. She is best known for her work in feminist epistemology and feminist stance theory, particularly her article “The Feminist Stance”, which combines Melanie Klein’s theories on psychoanalysis and the Oedipus complex.
The stance theory originates from Marxism and claims that the proletariat has a distinctive, different perspective on social relations and that only this perspective reveals the truth. Hartsock, making an analogy between the industrial labor of the proletariat and the domestic labor of women; she tries to show that women also have a distinctive stance.
Hartsock currently teaches as a professor at the University of Washington School of Political Science.
