Who is Peter Frederick Strawson?June 26, 2021
English philosopher. Between 1968 and 1987 he worked as Waynflete professor of metaphysical philosophy at Oxford University.
British philosopher born in 1919. His most important work is the article “On Referring”, in which he criticized Bertrand Russell’s Theory of Descriptions. He has important works in the fields of logic and metaphysics.
He is one of the philosophers who resurrected metaphysical orientations – perhaps for the first time – in analytical philosophy. The distinction between good metaphysics and bad metaphysics, which he made within the context of analytical philosophy, is important: he created an analytical view of the nature of conceptual thinking by distinguishing between (stipulative or bad metaphysics) and (descriptive or good metaphysics). Thus, analytical philosophy was freed from the last chains of logical positivism. Of course, there is not much analytic philosophy left, considering that logical atomism and positivism are succinct, or to put it mildly, diversity has now spread to such an extent that it creates poles in analytic philosophy.
