Who is Pierre Gassendi?June 26, 2021
Pierre Gassendi (22 January 1592 – 24 October 1655) was a French philosopher, mathematician and scientist.
Gassendi, who was very influential on the philosophical and scientific speculation and attitude that followed him, revived ancient atomism. Gassendi, who divided philosophy into three as logic, physics and moral philosophy, as Epicurus did in the Hellenistic period, first opposed the Cartesian understanding of innate ideas and adopted an empiricist point of view, arguing that the main source of knowledge was the senses and induction.
Gassendi, who, under the influence of his mathematician, never gave up on deduction, stripped philosophical atomism from its traditional material interpretation and transformed it into a form in which mathematics and mechanics could be applied to itself.
