Pythagoras or Pythagoras (Greek: Πυθαγόρας) was an Ionian philosopher, mathematician and founder of the movement known as Pythagoreanism, who lived between 570 BC – 495 BC.

Pythagoras was born in Greece, on the island of Samos, in the Aegean Sea, opposite the Dilek Peninsula. He is the son of the ringstone maker Mnesarchus. He received his primary education on the island where he was born. He went to different cities with his father for trade and visited many places.

Not much is known about Pythagoras’ life; because there are not many texts of his own. All that we know about Pythagoras has been passed on to us by others. Even the obvious facts of his life are largely guesswork.

However, with the ideas attributed to him, he has reached an important name among philosophers. It does not matter whether he is the true owner of these ideas or not; because the most important aspect of Pythagoras is his effects on philosophy.

Pythagoras was the first to call and describe himself as a philosopher, that is, a friend of wisdom, a seeker of knowledge. It is claimed that he has a traveler personality and that he built his philosophical world on the experience and knowledge he gained during these travels. Since Pythagoras did not put these thoughts in writing, what we know about him is limited to what his students told in their writings.

His best-known proposition is the Pythagorean proposition named after him.

Pythagoras is known as the “father of numbers”. Pythagoras and his students believed that everything was about mathematics, that numbers were the ultimate truth, that everything could be predicted and measured through mathematics.

Pythagoras is said to be the first person to also discover that the Earth is actually round.

When Pythagoras, who took 34 years of education from Classical Egypt and Babylonian oracles, returned to Italy, he had a mysticism that would help revive the Orphic teachings he had formed depending on certain levels.

The importance of numbers in the thought of Pythagoras, who believed in the sanctity of mathematics, comes from the education he received in the religion of Osiris in Egypt and the education he received in Byblonya, the country of mathematics where he went after the invasion of Egypt by Babylon.

Music took an important place in the philosophy of Pythagoras, with the rituals of the priests and Babylonian priests in Ancient Egypt being performed with music and the musical format was documented with mathematical operations.

While interpreting Pythagoras 1 as divine, which argues that numbers also depend on a certain order in parallel with the notes, he argued that the number 10 expresses the perfect union of the divine and the nothing.

The Pythagorean doctrine asserts that everything in the universe is identified by a number (especially an integer). It is the cause of 5 colors, 6 cold, 7 health, 8 love. Uniform geometric shapes are also important in Pythagoreanism.

Pythagoras was also engaged in music. He discovered that the shorter the string, the thinner the sound it made. He found that if one of the two strings was twice the length of the other, the sound of the short string was one octave above the sound of the long string. If the ratio of the lengths of the strings was like the ratio of 3 to 2, the sounds made by the two strings were quintuple pitched.

For this reason, for example, when we press our finger in the middle of one of the strings in the baglama, if we vibrate the string, the sound that will be produced will be one octave above the sound that will be produced when the string vibrates empty. Similarly, if our finger is at the point that divides the string by 2/3 of the length, it will sound one fifth of pitch higher than when the string is empty.

Pythagoras was the first Greek to realize that the morning star and the evening star are the same star. After her, this star was called Aphrodite for a long time. Today we know that this is the planet Venus.

When Pythagoras suggested that the Earth revolves around the Sun, he faced a rather harsh reaction. It is not known how much of his views on the sciences belonged to him.

He is the founder of the school of philosophy, where he presented the Pythagorean teaching. This school is also a religious community and quite dominates the politics of that time.

Some politicians and groups, who could not digest the innovations and discoveries that Pythagoras wanted to bring in mathematics, physics, philosophy, astronomy and music, set his school on fire by revolting the people against Pythagoras, and Pythagoras and his students died in these flames.

Pythagoras was a student of Thales, who is called the first philosopher. Thales wanted Pythagoras to go to Egypt for better development because Egypt was the leading country in mathematics at the time. After this suggestion, Pythagoras, who left his homeland and immigrated to Egypt, learned the Egyptian language, as it is said in Antiphon’s work “On those who stand out in Virtue”.

Later, when he returned to the island of Samos, seeing that his homeland was under the pressure of the tyrant Polycrates, he went to Croton, a Greek city in the south of Italy.
