Who is Sandra Harding?June 26, 2021
She is an American philosopher who studies feminist theory, postcolonial theory, epistemology, research methodology, and philosophy of science. She contributed to the multicultural study of stance theory and science. Newton is famous for describing his laws of motion as “rape guides” (Harding: 1986). Here’s his full quote on the subject:
“Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica is a ‘rape guide’ because ‘science is man’s encroachment on female nature’.”
She is currently a professor of Social Sciences and Comparative Education at the UCLA School of Graduate Education and Information Studies and director of the UCLA Center for Women’s Studies. Harding previously taught at the University of Delaware for many years. He completed his doctorate at New York University in 1973.
Harding has been a party to the ongoing debate over claims to scientific objectivity. His work was criticized by Paul R. Gross and Norman Levitt in their Higher Superstition.
