Who is Stephen Edelston Toulmin?June 26, 2021
British-American philosopher, born March 25, 1922. Toulmin, whose first book was on morality, approached the field of morality from a linguistic perspective, is mainly known for his work in the philosophy of science.
In his main work, Introduction to the Philosophy of Science, published in 1953, he argued that the process of theorizing with scientific theories is more like drawing or making maps that help one find one’s way and guide one, rather than the generalization process described in classical inductive views. Toulmin, who also worked on the history of science, also contributed to the field of logic.
He argues that science as an activity has historical and social dimensions. By adopting the paradigm view, he explains the emergence of a new paradigm with Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.
